Big Island Golf Courses
Bring your golf clubs for your Big
Island vacation. Hawaii Big Island is known as the Golf Capital
of Hawaii. The Big Island offers 17 golf courses which makes it
hard for the visiting golfer to choose from. Be aware that rates
for playing at Kohala Coast oceanfront resorts can be very expensive.
There are still plenty of golf courses with moderate rates available
for Big Island golfers on a budget. With the perfect warm
weather of the Big Island and spectacular views, playing golf
on the Big Island is truly a highlight of your Hawaii vacation.
The Big Island offers many championship golf courses,
designed by big names like famous 18-hole course by Robert Trent
Jones Sr. with the signature third hole, a 210-yard par 3, which
requires a tee shot that carries over 180 yards of ocean to reach
the green. Currently Mauna Kea Golf Course is under reconstruction.
It is supposed to be reopened in fall of 2008.
Kohala Coast Golf Courses
When staying at Big Island's Kohala Coast hotels,
the passionate golfer still has a number of top choices, even with
Mauna Kea Golf Course being closed at the moment. Hapuna
Golf Course offers spectacular views of the Kohala Coast and
the Pacific Ocean while the majestic volcanoes Mauna Kea Summit
and Mauna Loa deliver the most unique backdrop.
Mauna
Lani Resort is well known for its two 18-hole championship North
and South Courses. The fairway of the Mauna Lani South Course displays
crashing surf. North Course is somewhat more challenging and takes
longer to play than the South Course.
Waikoloa Beach Resort with Marriott Hotel, Hilton
Waikoloa Hotel and various Waikoloa Beach Resort condo complexes
offers two golf courses for Big Island golfers: the Waikoloa
Kings' Golf Course and Waikoloa
Beach Golf Course. The Beach Course features narrow fairways
cut into rugged lava fields. Forget about that golf ball disppearing
in the lava rocks. Just drop a new one.
Hualalai
Golf Course is a Jack Nicklaus course and the latest one on
the Kohala Coast. It is where the PGA Mastercard Championship takes
place. Be aware that only guests who stay at the Four Seasons Hualalai
Resort can reserve tee times there.
Kona Golf Courses
Kona Golf Courses might not be as well known as
the championship golf courses on the Kohala Coast are but there
are still great options for playing golf in the Kona area. One is
the Kona Country
Club which offers two 18-hole courses, the Ocean Course and
the Alii Mountain Course. These Kona courses have challenging terrain
in a spectacular setting. Makalei
Hawaii Country Club on the lower slopes of Hualalai Mountain
affords golfers pleasant year-round weather conditions and panoramic
views ranging from Kona to the Kohala Coast views. Find more information
and photos on another Kona Golf Course, the Big
Island Country Club.
Waikoloa Golf Course
The Waikoloa
Village golf course is challenging enough for the serious golfer,
but fun for beginners as well. It's a favorite of locals and visitors
alike. Located on the foothills of Mauna Kea overlooking the Pacific
Ocean, the Waikoloa Village Golf Course is truly one of Hawaii's
most beautiful golf courses. Golf rates are more accommodating the
budget traveler on Big Island vacation.
Waimea Golf Course
Another choice for those who don't mind to drive
a few miles but save big on golf fees, is the Waimea
Country Club Golf Course. Be aware that this is an upcountry
golf course which can be frequently in the rain or drizzle. We recommend
to call and make sure the weather conditions allow you to enjoy
your golf round. Get
a glimpse of the holes. This is not your typical Hawaiian resort
golf course.
Hamakua Coast Golf Course
The Big Island also offers public golf courses
which are nice for beginners who want to try out out some first
time golf on their Big Island vacation to tell friends that they
played gold in Hawaii. So try Hamakua
Country Club Golf Course. Even if you are not playing well and
get frustrated about your first golf game, at least you have not
spent big money on golfing in Hawaii.
Volcano Golf Course - Play golf in Pele's
backyard
Here is something unique for every golf player
around the world: you can even play golf at Hawaii Volcanoes National
Park. Volcano
Golf & Country Club, the Big Island's oldest golf course,
is set at 4,200 feet of elevation just a driver/wedge from the entrance
to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. With this high elevation expect
fresh mountain air and cooler temperatures but enjoy stunning views
of the Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea volcanoes. The hungry golfer will
find a breakfast and lunch menu available at Volcano Golf Course.

Hilo Golf Courses
Last but not least, we've got to mention two golf
courses in Hilo, Hilo
Municipal Golf Course, Hilo's public golf course with best rate
for Big Island visitors, and Naniloa Country Club with very affordable
rates. Read Frommer's
Review on Hilo Naniloa Golf Course.
