Discover the unique beauty of the Kohala
Coast for your next Big Island vacation on the Kohala Coast.
The South Kohala Coast has sunshine all year round, stretches of
beautiful white sand beaches and spectacular championship golf courses.
It is located on the west coast of the Big Island, north of the
Kona Coast. The Kohala Coast features 5-star ocean front resorts
& hotels and Kohala Coast resort condos. There are no affordable
vacation rental homes within ocean front 5-star Kohala Coast beach
resorts! However, our featured vacation rentals are all in close
vicinity to the best Kohala Coast beaches like Hapuna Beach State
Park, Mauna Kea Beach and Spencer Beach Park.
Big
Island Vacation Rentals North Kohala
North Kohala or Hawi is wellknown because of being
King Kamehameha's birthplace and closely connected with Hawaii's
history. Leaving the South Kohala Coast, the traveller can take
the route through Waimea and then the upper road to Hawii with spectacular
views over the Kona and Kohala Coast. The other option is taking
the Hwy along the ocean with having the chance during the winter
month to watch the whales right from the road. Hawi in North Kohala
has become a point of special interest through the Hawaii Ironman
Triathlon. Hawi is the turning point for triathletes on their bike
ride back to Kona. Visiting Hawi and Kapaau is like going back in
time with planatation style homes and quaint, locally owned shops
and art galleries. It's a short drive to the end of the road where
you find spectacular Pololu Valley Lookout.

One Hawaiian word everyone seems to know is 'Kona',
probably because of its association with the world famous Kona coffee
and Kona's history with Deep Sea Fishing. Kona actually means 'leeward
side' in Hawaiian which means full sun every day of the year! Because
of the year round warm weather Kona has developed from a quaint
fishing village into an oceanfront town which attracts people from
around the world at all times of the year. Downtown Kailua-Kona
features plenty of restaurants and shopping. Kona attracts each
year in October athletes and tourists from all over the world for
the Hawaii
Ironman Triathlon Big Island Ford Ironman Championship.
Big
Island Vacation Rentals Captain Cook and Kealakekua

Kailua Kona and South Kona area, Captain Cook
and Kealakekua, offer a wide array of affordable vacation rentals,
vacation condos, a few older hotels, B&Bs and modern newer ocean
front or ocean view hotels. There are accommodations available for
each budget. Kealakekua Bay's marine-life preserve offers the best
snorkel spot on the Big Island and farther South, Honaunau with
'City of Refuge' national historic park invite Kona and Big Island
vacationers for a visit.

Kapoho with its famous warm tide pools is about
a 15 minute drive from Pahoa and is the closest swimmer friendly
area to the town. From Hilo airport you drive only 35 minutes thru
sugar cane fields and papaya plantations on roads completely canopied
by Koa trees. You travel past an extinct volcano covered in lush
tropical rainforest and then arrive in the small community of cottages
and vacation homes of Kapoho in what is called the sunny side on
the East Coast of Hawaii.
Kau District is probably most well-known because
of South Point, the most Southern Point of the United States, and
the famous Green Sand Beaches with Mahaha (green sand) Beach being
the most famous of the olivine (green crystal) beaches of the Kau
district. Take South Point Road approximately 11 miles to Boat Ramp
at South Point. The beach is 2-1/2 miles east of ramp. Vehicle access
by 4-wheel drive only. Swimmers, bodysurfers, and divers enjoy this
beach when waters are calm. High surfs can generate powerful shorebreak
and rip currents. Kau area is also rich in Black sand beaches. The
Road to the Sea from the Hawaii Belt Road, leads to a remote, wilderness
site with two black sand beaches. An excellent place for beachcombing,
fishing and hiking. Be aware of strong currents and high surf at
all times of the year. Puanaluu Beach Park is one of the most famous
black sand beaches on the island of Hawaii. It is located at the
head of a small bay, a source of fresh water bubbles up from the
ocean bottom. Punaluu Beach is home to many endangered Green Sea
turtles. It offers parking, restrooms, showers, picnic tables, pavilion,
camping.

The Hamakua Coast features a 52-mile stretch from
Honokaa to Hilo on the Big Island's windward northeast side. This
area has no resorts or beaches, however, the lush, beautiful tropical
scenery invites Big Island vacationers for a drive along the coast
enjoying gorgeous ocean views. Major destination is Waipio Valley
Lookout, which allows tourists a look at a picture-perfect valley
and coastal views. Farther east along the Hamakua Coast, Akaka Waterfalls
and Laupahoehoe Beach Park are tourist attractions. The area in
and around historic plantation town of Honokaa offers very affordable
B&Bs, vacation rentals or small hotels.

Puako is next exit past Mauna Lani Beach Resort.
The former old time Hawaiiana ocean front village has become a favorite
vacation spot for beach lovers with quite a number of vacation houses
located on both sides of Puako Dr (mauka or makai side) and lots
of beautiful ocean front vacation homes in the area of gorgeous
Wailea Bay. Puako's hidden beaches are not only favored by vacationers
but also by the big green sea turtles, which one can spot frequently
sunbathing when wandering the Puako beaches. Puako also offers easy
ocean access spots for the passionate snorkeler and diver. Oceanfront
Puako vacation homes are not cheap. However, when on a budget, check
our listings of affordable Puako vacation condos.

Volcano
Village, Hawaii is one of the most beautiful, sureal and safest
places in today's busy world. Luckily there are nice places to stay
to enjoy this beautiful "Garden of Eden" and the sacred
world of the Goddess Pele and her volcano, Kilauea. Volcanoes National
Park Hawaii Volcanoes National Park was established in 1916 as the
country’s 13th National Park. It was created to preserve the
region’s unique volcanic features, its early human history,
and the plant and animal life.

The charming historic city of Hilo is situated
on the large curved Hilo Bay. The area is always lush and green
due to an annual rainfall of over 70 inches per year and is the
wettest city in the USA. Festivals, fairs, and open-air markets
can often be found along this stretch of town. One of the biggest
Hilo attractions to Hawaii residents and Big Island tourists is
the annual Merrie Monarch Hula Festival. Hilo's Farmers market,
biggest Farmer's market of the Big Island, Hawaii Tropical
Botanical Garden Hilo or the Hilo
Zoo are big tourist attractions in Hilo. Rainbow Waterfalls
in Hilo or Akaka Waterfalls, a short drive from Hilo, are a must
see tourist attraction.
