The most often asked question is probably
'When is the best weather for a Hawaii vacation?' This is the same
when Hawaii visitors decide for their travel dates for their Big
Island vacation. Fact is that the 'snow birds' want to escape the
cold months on the Mainland, catch some sun in Hawaii and swim in
the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean. Big Island weather is generally
sunny and warm all year around, also during the 'winter' months.
Big Island Vacation Weather
Many people dream of a Big
Island vacation during the holidays, even though November till
March is said to have more rain in Hawaii. Big Island hotels can
be pricey, car rentals much higher than normal (this is an island,
so only a certain number of cars is available), beaches and restaurants
are more crowded than average in our peak season months from middle
of December till middle of April. Make sure this is what you want
for your Hawaii vacation. Big Island weather is the same nice during
spring and fall months with great air fare specials to the Big Island,
Hawaii car rental deals and Kohala
Coast hotels & vacation rental accommodations bargains.
Big Island East Coast and West Coast
Weather
However, what each Big Island vacationer should
know is that Big Island weather can vary quite a bit depending on
the elevation of your vacation rental place and whether you stay
on the East Coast or the West Coast of the island. Big Island's
East Coast (Hamakua Coast, Hilo, Puna, Volcano) is generally the
wet, rainy side of the island, which allows for the most beautiful
rainforest to thrive. Sun lovers might want to stay on the much
drier and sunnier West Coast of the Big Island, on the Kona
Coast and Kohala Coast. It can be very hot though, more so during
the summer months. When renting Big Island beach rentals, make sure
your island vacation home has AC. During hot summer month a vacation
rental at a higher elevation is much appreciated because it provides
you with the comfort of a relaxing sleep.

Big Island 11 Microclimates Weather Changes
Last but not least, the fact that the Big Island
has about 11 microclimates makes it possible that the weather can
change dramatically within a short driving range of about 3 miles.
The most drastic change Big island visitors can expect is when coming
from the Kohala Coast beaches and taking Hwy 19 to Upcountry Waimea,
Parker Ranch cowboy country. Be prepared to close the roof of your
Convertible when entering Waimea Town and even bring a sweater doing
some shopping in Waimea. Another big weather change happens when
coming from Hilo (sea level) on Hwy 11 to Hawaii
Volcanoes National Park. The Park is at a 4000ft elevation.
Be prepared for cool and windy weather. Have some additional clothes
in your backpack when going in hikes in the Park. Lava flow is mostly
happening at sea level where it is hot and dry again.
Biggest Big Island Events
Decide what you want to see and to do on your
Big Island vacation and then find the best time of the year to do
that. If you want to stay away from big crowds, you might want to
avoid the biggest Big Island events Hawaii Ironman Triathlon in
Kona 10/13/07 and Merrie Monarch Hula Festival in Hilo 4/3/08. On
the other hand, they are a great reason to visit Hawaii for your
Big Island vacation. Spring and fall weather on the Big Island can
be very pleasant, especially in Kona and Hilo. Not as hot as the
summer months. Big Island weather in October and April may surprise
you with some rain though.
